If you have ever suffered a chipped, cracked or broken tooth, you will know how painful and traumatizing it can be. Teeth are among the most important parts of our body. Apart from the look, they perform several functions that are vital to our health and well-being. A chipped or cracked tooth can make us feel embarrassed while speaking or smiling.
The causes for a chipped tooth range from an external trauma to an internal crack in the tooth. External trauma usually occurs when one falls, hits their face due to a sports injury, or gets hit in the mouth by someone. It can also happen as a result of grinding teeth or clenching teeth at night. An internal crack in the tooth can lead to a chipped tooth if it is not treated in time.
When you visit our office for treatment, the dentist will determine your oral health condition and decide on the best procedure to restore your chipped tooth.
If the crack is not severe and has not affected the inner pulp of the tooth, the dentist may fix it with a bonding procedure. He will apply composite resin on the tooth and shape it accordingly before curing it with a special light. This resin helps to restore structural integrity to your tooth and protects it against further damage.
If the crack is more severe or has damaged the inner pulp of the tooth, the dentist will perform an inlay or onlay restoration procedure using dental crowns. During this process, two porcelain crowns are fixed onto either side of your tooth using dental cement and bonded permanently into position.
A chipped tooth can also be restored using dental veneers. We recommend this treatment if your front teeth have suffered damage due to an external trauma or grinding of teeth at night. The veneers are custom-made according to your cosmetic needs and shade requirements to give you a perfect smile again. Veneers are thin shells that are bonded onto your natural teeth using dental adhesives after removing about 0.4mm of enamel from their surface to make room for them.
