Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a dental procedure carried out to remove all the plaque and tartar from the teeth. The procedure removes the bacteria, food particles and other microbes from the teeth and gums.

Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

The dentist will first examine your oral cavity to determine whether scaling and root planing are required. We will also check for signs of cavities or gum diseases. If the dentist determines they are necessary, we will start the procedure.

During scaling, we will use an ultrasonic tip made from hardened ceramic. The ultrasonic tip vibrates at a high frequency to remove the tartar deposits from the surface of teeth and below the gum line. After the tartar has been removed, the dentist will clean the teeth using an antimicrobial solution. This solution helps eliminate any remaining bacteria in the mouth.

Root planing is done using a hand-held instrument designed for this purpose. The dentist uses this instrument to clean the surface of the root canal cavity where the dental roots are present. This helps eliminate any microbial agents that could infect the tooth roots and result in gum diseases and other oral infections. Root planning also smooths out rough surfaces and makes sure that they don’t develop tartar deposits in the future.

Aftercare Instructions

We will give you aftercare instructions after scaling and root planing that you must follow to get optimum results from this treatment.

Brush your teeth twice a day using antibacterial toothpaste. Use proper brushing techniques to prevent further damage to your teeth and gums.

Use an antibacterial mouthwash to wash your mouth after every meal. It will eliminate any food particles or microbes from your mouth, thus preventing oral infections.

Maintain optimum dental hygiene by flossing and using interdental brushes every day before starting your brushing routine. These tools help remove food particles, tartar deposits, or other microbes between your teeth or below your gums, thus preventing oral infections.

Avoid consuming sugary foods or beverages as they can lead to plaque formation.

Drink plenty of water as it rids your mouth of any dryness or other issues related to its tissues.
