Partial dentures are removable appliances used to replace a few missing teeth. They can be removed anytime without causing any damage to the natural teeth. Partial dentures consist of artificial teeth attached to a pink, gum-colored base. The artificial teeth are made from a ceramic material, making the dentures strong enough to withstand the pressures of chewing food.
There are two types of partial dentures: complete and incomplete dentures.
Complete Dentures: This type of denture replaces all the missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw with prosthetic teeth. The entire jawbone is supported by these dentures, thereby maintaining its structure and shape.
Incomplete Dentures: This type of denture replaces only a few missing teeth with prosthetic ones. In this case, the supporting bone of the jaw is not influenced by the denture, making it possible for the remaining natural teeth to be positioned correctly.
The dentist will take an initial impression of your mouth to create a customized partial denture that fits you perfectly. The partial denture will be fabricated at a dental laboratory in a few weeks and will be sent to us after it is ready. During this time, we will make sure that you have a temporary partial denture to protect your natural teeth and prevent them from shifting positions.
When you visit us for the next appointment, we will remove the temporary partial denture from your mouth and place the customized one. It will be adjusted until it fits comfortably in your mouth without causing any irritation or discomfort. The dentist will also provide you with instructions on how to care for your partial dentures so that they last for several years without any hassle.
You must follow these steps to care for your partial dentures:
– Brush your prosthetic tooth surface with a soft-bristle toothbrush at least twice a day to keep them clean and free from stains and plaque.
– Remove your partial denture while sleeping as they may cause discomfort when you sleep with them in place.
– Clean them with lukewarm water and rinse them thoroughly. Never use hot water to clean them as they might get damaged due to heat.
– Never keep them immersed in water for long periods as they may get damaged due to prolonged exposure to water.
