Missing teeth in the mouth can be a turn-off for most people. If you are missing one or more teeth, they can be a huge embarrassment and make people look down on you. In some cases, the missing teeth can also cause issues with chewing and biting food, leading to malnutrition and so on.
If you have lost your teeth because of tooth decay, gum disease, external trauma, aging, or other reasons, they can be replaced by dentures.
Dentures are prosthetic appliances used to replace both natural teeth and gums. They are removable and can replace an entire arch of teeth or just a few ones. They are made from acrylic and gum-colored pink dental-grade porcelain material which is used to mimic the look of natural gums and teeth.
There are different types of dentures available in the market, which can be used to replace different sets of missing teeth:
Complete dentures: These are the best option for replacing an entire set of teeth. They resemble a complete set of natural teeth in every aspect and would hardly be distinguishable from your natural teeth.
Partial dentures: When you still have some natural teeth intact, partial dentures can be used to replace missing teeth only in specific arches.
Immediate dentures: When you go through extractions, the tissues of the gums would shrink and contract due to lack of nutrition. This could cause your remaining teeth to loosen and move from their ideal positions. Hence, immediate dentures are placed immediately after extractions so that they help prevent further movement of your remaining teeth.
Overdentures: Sometimes, patients may lose all their natural teeth but can have implants placed in their mouth. Dentures that cover these implants are called overdentures.
Patients with missing teeth may feel reluctant about getting dentures placed as it would make them feel self-conscious about their appearance. We make sure that our patients do not feel this way by taking care of them the best way we can during the procedure. In order to get dentures fabricated, the dentist takes the dental measurements of the patient which are sent to the dental lab for fabrication. Once it is ready, we will place it in your mouth for a trial run so that you can check if it fits comfortably and does not feel too bulky or unnatural in appearance. If any changes are needed, we will make them at this stage before giving you your final set of dentures.
Once your permanent denture gets inserted into your mouth, it is essential that you take care of them well and keep them clean by rinsing them under water after each meal. The prosthetic tooth that replaces your upper canine tooth should be kept clean by brushing it separately using a specially designed brush called a spittoon toothbrush.
